When I was nine years old, my mom bought my first pack of baseball cards.
I will never forget it. She was grocery shopping and noticed some 1986 Topps Baseball rack packs hanging from a display near the checkout line.
Not too long after that, I met a couple of other kids in the neighborhood who had trading cards, and that was it. I was hooked!
The very next year, my dad started taking me to card shows. The trading card industry was booming at the time, and we were doing pretty well buying and selling at the shows. So well in fact, that at the age of nine I convinced my dad to help me open up my own local trading card shop. We named it Chad and Dad’s.
I was still in elementary school, and my dad was working full-time, but somehow we still made it work. My mom would drive me to the card shop after school, I’d do whatever homework I could while I was running the shop, and my dad would help on weekends.
Back then, the only thing people cared about was baseball cards.
We couldn’t give football or basketball cards away.
To this day, I vividly remember talking my dad into buying 20 unopened cases of 1986 Fleer basketball cards.
You read that right.
We had at least 240 wax boxes, but at the time, no one would buy them. In fact, after our first year of being open, we had yet to sell one full wax box and placed it on our clearance shelves at 25 cents per pack.
Regrettably, we ended up selling the remaining 239 boxes back to the candy distributor we had originally bought them from for 75-85 cents on the dollar.
Today, those same cards that sat for a full year on our clearance racks sell for approximately $200,000 per box.
Looking back, I realize all of my fellow card collectors have horror stories of selling or trading something for pennies on the dollar, only to end up kicking themselves about it later.
I wish I’d had someone who would’ve told me to hold onto those boxes way back then, and that’s part of what I’m trying to do with Jackpot Sports Cards.
I’m not just trying to buy and sell trading cards – I want to share my expertise with you, help you find what you’re looking for, and give you the advice I wish I’d been given as a young kid running my card shop after school.
So, whether you collect for the sheer joy of the hobby, or you look at your collection as more of an asset, I can help you to secure your investment, or revisit what it felt like to open up a fresh pack or box with family or friends, just like you did when you were a kid.
Thank you for visiting our website and please check back often,
